A South African cricket legend has called out a young batter for his recent poor form, sparking a debate about the importance of game management.
Dewald Brevis, the star batter representing Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League, has had a disappointing start to the SA20 tournament. In his first two innings, Brevis managed only 6 and 12 runs, and his struggles have not gone unnoticed by the legendary Herschelle Gibbs.
The Great South African Slam
Gibbs, a true icon of South African cricket, took to X to express his concerns. He questioned the approach of Brevis and even directed his criticism towards the coaches of Pretoria Capitals, the team Brevis plays for in the SA20.
"I'd love to know what the coaches are telling this young man. He's not showing any signs of game management, despite his experience in T20 cricket," Gibbs wrote.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Brevis, a talented batter, has been dismissed in both innings by bowlers who outplayed him. In his first game, he edged a bouncer from pacer Janco Smit, and in the second, he fell victim to Lewis Gregory's short ball, getting caught at long-on.
And this is the part most people miss...
While Brevis' performance has been under the microscope, the Pretoria Capitals have also struggled. In their most recent game, they faced a powerful Sunrisers Eastern Cape side led by Quinton de Kock. De Kock's batting masterclass, including a blazing 77 off just 47 balls, propelled the Sunrisers to a dominant 48-run victory and sent them to the top of the SA20 table.
The Capitals, on the other hand, remain winless after two matches.
So, is it solely Brevis' fault, or is there a larger issue at play within the team?
What do you think? Should Brevis shoulder all the blame, or is there a need for a collective effort to turn things around?
