A young woman's life tragically cut short, leaving her family heartbroken and questioning the care she received.
Elyse Foster, a vibrant 22-year-old from Cheddleton, Staffordshire, was a beacon of kindness, working as a care assistant and deeply cherished by her loved ones. Her life took a devastating turn when she was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, a rare autoimmune condition that weakens muscles, in March 2024. This was followed by the discovery of a large thymoma, a type of cancer affecting the thymus gland, which had unfortunately spread to her lungs.
After undergoing chemotherapy, Elyse was scheduled for surgery on August 30th at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital. However, the procedure was postponed as she wished to embark on a holiday. The surgery was eventually performed at the Royal Stoke Hospital on September 22nd, with the aim of removing as much of the tumor as possible.
But here's where it gets difficult for her family to accept... Following the operation, Elyse's condition never truly stabilized. On October 7th, she suffered a cardiac arrest, and sadly, her life support was switched off on October 17th. An inquest at Stoke-on-Trent coroner's court heard from medical professionals, including three doctors and a pathologist, who all stated they could not definitively pinpoint the exact cause of the cardiac arrest. The coroner ultimately recorded a verdict of death by natural causes, with the necessary surgical procedure being a contributing factor.
Despite the official findings, Elyse's family feels profoundly let down by the Royal Stoke Hospital. Her mother, Kirstie Tittensor, tearfully described Elyse as "fun-loving, she liked her friends and her family, she was caring, she worked in a care home, she was just loved by everybody." She further emphasized Elyse's positive and hardworking nature, stating, "We feel as a family that the Royal Stoke massively let Elyse down."
And this is the part that sparks concern for many... The family is now contemplating legal action against the hospital trust. Elyse's grandmother, Joy Tittensor, expressed their deep desire for no other family to endure such pain: "We don't want this to happen to anybody else, we don't want anybody to go through what we've been through."
The University Hospitals of North Midlands, which encompasses the Royal Stoke Hospital, has previously extended its condolences to the family and has been contacted for a statement.
