Portsmouth 0-1 Sheffield United: Brooks clinches stoppage-time glory
A dramatic late strike from Andre Brooks sealed a 1-0 victory for Sheffield United at Fratton Park, denying Portsmouth a potential lifeline in the Championship survival battle.
Pompey had plenty of openings and created chances throughout, only to be thwarted by Brooks’s close-range finish as the final whistle approached.
The first half hummed with tension as both sides pressed for an opener. Gustavo Hamer struck the woodwork for the Blades, while Portsmouth thought they had a goal when Colby Bishop tucked the ball away, but the referee’s decision to rule out the finish sparked anger among home fans.
After the break, chances flowed at both ends. Michael Cooper twice denied Millenic Alli in stoppage time to preserve the win for Chris Wilder’s men, who rose to 15th and closed the gap to the playoff places to six points. Portsmouth slipped to 21st, hovering just above the relegation zone.
Both teams had fresh impetus coming into the clash following recent losses. Kalvin Phillips made his first start for Sheffield United after joining on loan from Manchester City. In the first half, Hamer’s looping shot from a tight angle hit the post, keeping the scoreline level.
Bishop later found the net from close range for Portsmouth, but the goal was ruled out due to a foul in the build-up, much to the home crowd’s frustration. Adrian Segecic and Zak Swanson tested each goalkeeper, while John Swift and Alli threatened in the second period. Patrick Bamford also tested Nicolas Schmid, and Brooks had an effort sail just wide.
With time running out, Tyrese Campbell delivered a cross to the back post, where Brooks tucked home his fourth goal in five games to crown a hard-fought victory for United.
Reaction quotes
Portsmouth manager John Mousinho on BBC Radio Solent: “Losses sting, especially given how the game unfolded. We were the better side for long spells and created excellent opportunities, but we lacked the composure and ruthlessness in front of goal. A dominant first half should have yielded more than a single chance, and we didn’t build on that after the break.”
Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder on BBC Radio Sheffield: “We were outplayed in the first half, but we didn’t let them seal the game. We grew into it after the break. Kalvin Phillips brought balance in midfield, helping us transition and press. A late winner is huge for the squad.”
