Imagine hearing your name called over the school intercom, only to realize it’s not for detention—it’s for the basketball team. For Madison Scott, that moment in fourth grade at Ardmore Elementary School in Prince George’s County, Maryland, was the spark that ignited a journey from the DMV to the WNBA. But here’s where it gets controversial: in a world where athletes often chase the spotlight, Scott’s path was anything but conventional. Now a proud member of the Washington Mystics, Scott reflects on that pivotal moment with clarity. “The coach was announcing the team names, and mine was the last one called. I was sweating bullets until I heard ‘Madison Scott,’” she recalls. From that day on, basketball wasn’t just a game—it was her identity. “Me and the game of basketball have been inseparable,” she says, a bond forged in the neighborhoods of Montgomery and Prince George’s County.
Growing up in the DMV, Scott’s life was a tapestry of experiences. From foster care in Silver Spring to the suburbs of Bowie and the city streets of Washington, D.C., each move shaped her character and her game. “Every county I’ve called home taught me something,” she notes. But it was at Bishop McNamara High School in Forestville, Maryland, where basketball transformed from a joy to a career. “McNamara truly accepted me in all my facets. Her decision to attend the University of Mississippi raised eyebrows. Why leave the familiar DMV for the unfamiliar South? “I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself, something that would push me out of my comfort zone,” Scott explains. At Ole Miss, she found growth—both on and off the court. It was there she discovered her passion for giving back, leading her to join the Xi Zeta Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Scott’s love for the youth and her desire to pay it forward led to the creation of the Madison Scott Basketball Foundation, a non-profit camp for kids in grades three to eight. “So many people believed in me before I believed in myself. I want to do the same for others,” she says. The camp, free for attendees, has already made stops in St. Croix and Oxford, Mississippi. “It’s about more than basketball—it’s about life skills,” she adds.
