Lee Stevenson, formerly Max Verstappen's chief mechanic at Red Bull Racing, has officially been appointed as the Team Manager for the burgeoning Audi F1 team. This is a massive statement of intent from Audi, signaling their ambition to compete at the very highest level when they officially enter the sport in 2026.
This news comes hot on the heels of Audi's successful shakedown of their 2026 car in Barcelona. They were, in fact, the very first team to put their new machine on track, giving them a potential early advantage in understanding the radical new regulations. But here's where it gets interesting...
Audi's journey to F1 began with a full takeover and rebranding of the Sauber team. Think of it like this: Sauber is the foundation, and Audi is building a brand new, state-of-the-art skyscraper on top of it. Leading this ambitious project is Jonathan Wheatley, who took on the role of Team Principal in early 2024. Wheatley, of course, needs no introduction, having enjoyed a hugely successful period as Red Bull's Sporting Director.
Wheatley's arrival at Audi followed Stevenson's initial move to Sauber last year, where he initially served as Chief Mechanic. Now, just ahead of a crucial season, Stevenson has been promoted to Team Manager! And this is the part most people miss... this isn't just about filling a position; it's about injecting a winning mentality and operational excellence into the very heart of the Audi team.
What exactly will Stevenson be doing? His new role will likely mirror many of the responsibilities Wheatley held at Red Bull, including overseeing all aspects of Audi's race operations. Wheatley was also instrumental in building Red Bull's legendary pit crew, renowned for their lightning-fast stops. Stevenson's F1 career began back in 2000 as a mechanic with the Jordan team (now Aston Martin). He then joined Red Bull in 2006 and steadily climbed the ranks, eventually becoming Chief Mechanic in 2023. That year, Red Bull absolutely dominated the sport, winning all but one of the 22 races, as Verstappen cruised to his third consecutive World Championship. Talk about a winning environment! He started with Sauber in April 2024 before this recent promotion as the team transitioned to Audi.
