The Michigan Wolverines' coaching situation has taken a dramatic turn, leaving fans on the edge of their seats. Following the shocking firing of Sherrone Moore on December 10th, the search for a new head coach is in full swing, and the latest updates from ESPN insider Pete Thamel offer a glimpse into the Wolverines' current strategy.
According to Thamel, Alabama's head coach, Kalen DeBoer, remains Michigan's top choice. However, the pursuit is complex. Thamel noted that the outcome of the College Football Playoff opener between Alabama and Oklahoma would significantly influence Michigan's ability to hire DeBoer. An Alabama loss could make it easier to lure him away. But here's where it gets controversial: DeBoer has publicly stated his commitment to Alabama, and sources suggest that the university is actively working to secure him with a new contract. This presents a major hurdle for Michigan.
DeBoer has repeatedly expressed his contentment in Tuscaloosa. However, the pressure is on, especially if Alabama suffers a loss, potentially leading to back-to-back seasons with four losses. When asked directly if he would be Alabama's head coach in 2026, DeBoer gave a firm "Yes."
But Michigan isn't putting all its eggs in one basket. Thamel reports that the Wolverines have also explored other coaching options. This is where the plot thickens. Michigan has reportedly held "exploratory conversations" with Arizona State's Kenny Dillingham, Missouri's Eli Drinkwitz, and Washington's Jedd Fisch.
"Michigan officials aren’t solely focused on DeBoer," Thamel said. "The hiring pool, if it’s not DeBoer, sources have told me, would involve Kenny Dillingham of Arizona State, Eli Drinkwitz of Missouri and Washington’s Jedd Fisch. The timing could be tricky. Two of those coaches – Dillingham and Drinkwitz – have post Christmas bowls."
The situation is further complicated by the circumstances surrounding Sherrone Moore's firing. He was let go after allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a female staffer were substantiated. Moore was subsequently arrested and charged with serious offenses, including home invasion and stalking. This has undoubtedly added another layer of complexity to the coaching search.
