Ready for a blast from the past? After a four-year hiatus, I dove back into Animal Crossing: New Horizons, bracing myself for the worst. I recalled the days when villagers would hold grudges and towns would fall into disrepair if neglected. I was steeling myself for chaos when I logged back into my island, Honaloha.
But here's where it gets controversial... or, rather, anticlimactic. To my surprise, Honaloha was almost exactly as I'd left it, frozen in a 2021 Christmas-time reverie. Beyond a few basement bugs and a slightly wild haircut, it was as if time stood still. Avery and Zucker, at least, were happy to see me.
So, why the return? The upcoming 3.0 update is the main draw, bringing a slew of new features, including a hotel to manage. Plus, the gaming calendar is unusually quiet, and the pull of my abandoned island, fueled by curiosity and nostalgia, was surprisingly strong.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons launched in 2020, coinciding with the global pandemic and lockdowns. For many, its virtual world offered a much-needed escape, a place of community and comfort. But what if the game doesn't hold those same emotional connections for everyone?
For me, it's more like revisiting an old home. Seeing Honaloha with fresh eyes, I'm already itching to make changes. My old footpaths are needlessly convoluted, and some decor choices are questionable. I have stacks of abandoned furniture, and, even worse, the memories of Chops, the annoying pig villager, have come flooding back.
My to-do list is already growing. That flower bed by the lamppost needs to go, and the Japanese arch clashes with my Stonehenge. There's a picnic table blocking my Grecian plaza, and a bush needs to be moved. And of course, I'm still plotting Chops' downfall. It's clear there's work to be done to make a meaningful return for the 3.0 update, and it's already drawing me back in.
But will 3.0 keep me hooked? New Horizons, with its slow release of new features, always felt a little lacking, and I never quite warmed to its less sassy villagers. I doubt I would have stuck around if it wasn't for the lockdown zeitgeist. As intrigued as I am about hotel management and extra storage space, I'm skeptical my interest will last long enough for those Christmas decorations to come out again. Perhaps Nintendo has grander plans beyond 3.0, but for now, it's surprisingly nice to be back among old haunts and old friends. Stupid moustachioed pig aside.
What do you think? Did Animal Crossing: New Horizons provide you with a sense of comfort during the pandemic? Are you excited about the 3.0 update? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
