Imagine being in a high-pressure, cutthroat environment, where every move you make is scrutinized and compared to your teammate's. This was the reality for Sergio Pérez, who, in a recent podcast, revealed that partnering with Max Verstappen at Red Bull was an incredibly challenging and unique experience in Formula 1.
Pérez, a seasoned F1 driver since 2011, had his most successful years alongside Verstappen at Red Bull. However, he described the dynamic as an incredibly tense and complicated atmosphere.
"Being Max's teammate at Red Bull was the worst job in F1. I knew I was up against a formidable opponent," Pérez shared.
But here's where it gets controversial: Pérez suggests that even outperforming Verstappen created problems. "If I was faster than Max, it became an issue. The team dynamics were such that any deviation from Max's pace created tension. It was a fine line to tread," he explained.
Pérez's best season, 2023, saw him finish as runner-up to Verstappen, but the following year, things took a turn. Despite Verstappen's championship win in 2024, Pérez's performance dipped, and he was eventually released by Red Bull.
"We had the potential to dominate F1 for a decade, but it all fell apart," Pérez lamented.
Now, Pérez is back in F1 with a new team, Cadillac, and a new partner, Valtteri Bottas.
So, what do you think? Was Pérez's experience at Red Bull an anomaly, or does it highlight a broader issue in F1 team dynamics? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
